Inflight Wi-Fi — Terms & Conditions
Important: By accessing or purchasing Air India’s inflight Wi-Fi (‘Service’), you agree to these Terms & Conditions (‘T&Cs’).
- Service: Air India’s inflight internet connectivity delivered via satellite and/or air-to-ground systems, accessible through the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ SSID and/or the portal wifi.airindia.com.
- Flight Segment: A single take‑off to landing segment.
- Device: A customer’s personal Wi-Fi enabled phone, tablet, laptop or similar.
- Plans: Time or flight segment-based access (e.g., Chat, Mail & Surf, Full flight, Easy Connect), as displayed on the portal.
- IFMC Provider: Licensed Inflight & Maritime Connectivity provider(s) and technical partners supporting Air India’s service.
- Maharaja Club: Air India’s loyalty programme.
2.1 Availability indicators
Service availability is shown indicated via the ‘Wi-Fi Onboard’ icon in flight status, during web check-in, and in pre-journey communications. Wi-Fi availability is subject to change last minute due to operational, regulatory, or technical reasons.
2.2 Activation timing
- India airspace: Per DoT Flight and Maritime Connectivity Rules (FMCR), Wi-Fi will be made available after the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3000 m or 10,000 ft.
- Other airspaces: Activation may vary by local regulations and provider capability.
2.3 Aircraft & route coverage
Coverage depends on aircraft equipment, route, and regional permissions. It may be unavailable across certain geographies (e.g., polar regions or specific national airspaces).
2.4 Eligibility
Access, pricing and benefits may vary based on cabin, route, and Maharaja Club tier status.
3.1 Connection steps
- Set your device on Airplane Mode.
- Turn Wi-Fi on.
- Connect to ‘Air India Wi-Fi’.
- The connection portal should open automatically in your browser. If it does not, search for wifi.airindia.com in your browser’s search tab.
- Enter your Last Name, Booking Reference Number (PNR)/Ticket Number (last 4 digits), Email ID, and Phone Number for regulatory verification.
- Select and pay for the plan (if applicable).
3.2 Identity & security compliance
Customer details are collected to comply with applicable regulatory requirements for inflight connectivity.
3.3 Maharaja Club ID linking
To access applicable benefits, the Maharaja Club ID must be linked to the booking at the time of reservation or added during check-in prior to boarding.
4.1 Plan Availability
Available plans and prices are displayed on the portal and may vary based on route, aircraft type, duration, or promotional offers.
4.2 Per device, per segment
Each plan is valid for one device on one flight segment only. Plans are non-transferable and cannot cannot be shared via tethering, repeaters, or hotspots.
4.3 Multiple devices
You may connect multiple devices only by purchasing separate plans for each.
4.4 Plan change & pause
Plans cannot be changed or paused once active. Time-based passes expire based on activation time, not usage duration.
4.5 Full flight pass scope
Full flight passes apply to a single flight segment, not multiple.
5.1 Payment methods
Onboard Wi‑Fi plan purchases via UPI are available only when made from mobile devices with UPI apps installed; for other devices including mobile devices customers can use international credit/debit cards that do not require OTP.
5.2 Currency, taxes & fees
Prices may vary by currency and include or exclude applicable GST/VAT based on jurisdiction.
5.3 Invoice
An invoice or receipt is sent to the email provided during purchase.
5.4 Price changes
Prices, discounts, and benefits are subject to change without notice and are consistent with industry standards.
6.1 Expected performance
Speed and latency depend on aircraft equipment, satellite footprint, weather, number of concurrent users, provider constraints, and geo-regulatory restrictions. Streaming and heavy sync may be restricted or throttled to ensure a fair experience for all users.
6.2 VPN usage
VPN access is permitted but may be intermittent or require you to re-login due to brief connectivity losses inherent to airborne networks.
6.3 Fair use
Air India may manage traffic, throttle high bandwidth apps, block malicious or abusive activity, and prioritise critical services to preserve network stability and equitable access.
6.4 Prohibited uses
- All forms of voice and video call over the internet are prohibited and blocked as per Air India’s policy.
- Illegal, harmful, obscene, harassing, infringing, or unsafe activities, malware distribution, attempts to circumvent security, tethering or sharing, or any use violating law or airline policies are strictly prohibited.
7.1 Encryption & public network
Sessions leverage SSL/TLS transport where applicable. However, the service is a public network, and you are responsible for device hygiene (updates, antivirus, firewalls) and safe browsing.
7.2 Regulatory compliance
The service operates in compliance with Indian FMCR 2018 (as amended 2024), TRAI IFC recommendations, and lawful intercept/monitoring obligations as applicable.
7.3 Monitoring & content controls
Air India and/or IFMC providers may log, monitor, filter, block, or retain data: necessary to comply with law and to maintain service integrity, subject to applicable privacy laws and retention norms.
8.1 Payment failures
If a payment attempt fails, you will be redirected to retry or use an accepted alternative. Debited amounts for failed transactions are typically auto-reversed by your bank within 3 - 7 business days to the original mode of payment.
8.2 Connectivity failures
If the service is unusable despite successful payment, automatic refunds may be processed to the original mode of payment within 5 - 7 business days. For refund-related issues, you can contact us through the Customer Support.
8.3 Mid-session outage
If Wi-Fi stops mid-session due to aircraft, satellite, weather, or regulatory events, refund can be requested through the Customer Support. Claim will be initiated post validation of the complaint.
8.4 Reconnection within validity
If disconnected or Wi-Fi is toggled off, you may reconnect within the selected plan time through the device Wi-Fi settings.
9.1 Typical interruptions
- Beam transitions, akin to switching mobile network zones.
- Overflight of countries not authorizing inflight connectivity.
- Adverse weather, satellite or ground infrastructure issues.
- Operational changes (equipment swaps, reroutes).
9.2 Bandwidth not guaranteed
Operating bandwidth isn’t guaranteed for any plan level. Heavy usage may impact bandwidth.
10.1 Browsers & OS
For best experience, use updated Chrome (Android) or Safari (iOS).
10.2 Airplane mode
Devices must remain in Airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled.
11.1 Member benefits
Maharaja Club Wi-Fi benefits shall be available only where the member’s Maharaja Club ID is linked to the booking at the time of reservation or is added during check-in prior to boarding. Eligibility for complimentary Wi-Fi access shall be determined solely based on the member’s tier status. Air India reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to modify, withdraw, or suspend these benefits at any time without prior notice.
Tier‑wise Benefits
- Red – 1 hour of complimentary Wi‑Fi access for chat.
- Silver – 1 hour of complimentary Wi‑Fi access for chat.
- Gold – 1 hour of complimentary Wi‑Fi for browsing, plus unlimited chat access.
- Platinum – Unlimited complimentary Wi‑Fi for browsing, chat, and streaming.
11.2 One-time use
Special benefit for Maharaja Club members are limited to one use per flight segment per member per device.
11.3 Benefits are non-transferable and may only be used by the eligible member.
11.4 All other Maharaja Club Terms and Conditions apply.
- The Inflight Wi‑Fi service is an optional, paid ancillary service offered separately from the air transportation service and does not form part of the passenger’s ticket or contract of carriage.
- Prices, plans, speeds, and data allowances may vary by flight, route, aircraft type, cabin class, time of purchase, and other commercial or operational factors, and are not guaranteed to be consistent across flights.
- The structure, pricing, availability, and features of Wi‑Fi plans may be modified, expanded, replaced, or withdrawn at any time.
- Pricing reflects access to the network service and does not constitute any guarantee of speed, latency, bandwidth, or performance levels, which may vary during the course of the flight.
- The Services may be offered on a standalone basis or bundled with other Air India products or services, including fares, seat selections, cabin upgrades, subject to applicable terms and eligibility conditions.
- Refunds shall be limited to instances where the Wi‑Fi service could not be activated after successful payment due to a verified technical failure attributable to the service provider. Dissatisfaction with speed, interruptions, or restricted applications does not qualify for a refund.
- Temporary interruptions, reduced speeds, network congestion, or inability to access specific applications shall not, by themselves, qualify for a refund.
- No refunds or credits will be provided for partially used plans, unused periods, early disconnection, voluntary termination, or passenger choice not to use the service after purchase.
- The Services may include sponsored content, advertising, or partner offers, which may be made available based on factors such as flight, route, or user interaction, in accordance with applicable laws and the Privacy Policy.
13.1 Cabin etiquettes
Respect the quiet environment. Always use headphones while viewing content.
13.2 Crew instructions
You must comply with all crew instructions, including storing devices and discontinuing use when instructed.
13.3 No voice/video calls
Voice/video calls (VoIP, conference apps) are strictly prohibited. Breaches may result in disconnection, plan cancellation without refund, and further action.
14.1 Portal content
The portal and its content are for personal, non-commercial use. Do not copy, distribute, or create derivatives without Air India’s prior written consent.
15.1 As-Is service
The service is provided on a ‘as-is’ and ‘as-available’ basis. Air India does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free connectivity.
15.2 Indirect damages
Air India is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive damages, data loss, business interruption, or profit losses arising from service use or inability to use.
15.3 Device risks
Air India is not liable for malware or intercepted data. You are requested to maintain adequate security and assume all risks associated with using your device on a public network.
Air India may suspend or terminate access without refund in cases of violations (e.g., prohibited calls, tethering, abusive use, illegal content) or to ensure safety, comply with the law, or preserve network stability.
These T&Cs are governed under the Indian law for flights operating entirely within India. For international flights, governing law may be the law of the carrier’s principal place of business (India) and/or the law applicable where a claim arises, subject to conflict-of-laws rules.
Customer care will make the first attempt to resolve the issue. If unresolved, disputes may be addressed per Air India’s general terms of carriage and applicable consumer protection frameworks. Alternative dispute resolutions can be availed, if required.
Air India reserves the right to update these T&Cs at any time. These updates become effective upon publication on the portal or airindia.com.
- During flight: Seek assistance from cabin crew. Basic troubleshooting is available in the portal.
- Post flight refunds/support: For refund/status issues noted in section 8, you can contact us through the Customer Support.
- General feedback: You may provide feedback through Air India customer support portal.
