Travelling as a Young Passenger

Who is a young passenger?
Children aged 12 years to 17 years, who can travel alone, are considered young passengers.  

Fare pricing and special handling fares

  • A young passenger will be charged a full adult travel fare.
  • We offer assistance for young passengers if requested by the parent or legal guardian.

Service availability

  • The assistance service is applicable only on Air India operated flights.
    We do not offer this service on codeshare flights. Additionally, this service is not extended to connecting flights where any part of the journey is operated by another airline. For example, the young passenger assistance service is not available for a flight from Mumbai to Chennai via Delhi, if Mumbai to Delhi is operated by Air India and Delhi to Chennai is operated by a different airline.
  • In case your child has a medical condition:
    • The assistance service will be provided only after receiving clearance from our medical team.           
    • If your child is unwell, the assistance expected should be within the care our staff can provide.
  • We do not extend our young passenger assistance service to children requiring special assistance. In such cases, the child must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian to travel with us.

Documents required

  • Consent letter: A filled and notarised form, signed by the parent or legal guardian that clearly states the child’s details and consent allowing their solo travel.
    If the young passenger is travelling to or from UK, the following forms are required:
  • In addition to the above, a valid and original government issued photo identification proof to be presented at our check-in counter.
  • We may require additional documents, depending on the sector the young passenger is travelling. We request that you reach out to your nearest consulate for more details.

At departure airport

  • Please carry all mandatory forms and documents for verification and submission.
  • The submitted forms and documents will be validated at the time of check-in.
  • The young passenger will be allowed to travel only after the verification of all the documents. Please note that the final approval is subject to discretion of the airport staff.

Assistance at the airport

We offer the following if you purchase our young passenger assistance service:

  • Our staff will assist the young passenger through all airport formalities, including immigration and customs in case of international flights.
  • We will escort your child to the designated boarding gate, and at the arrival destination, to the authorised adult.
  • The young passenger will receive priority boarding.
     

Accompanied Minor

Who is an accompanied minor?
A child aged 5 years to 11 years, travelling under adult supervision is considered an accompanied minor. An adult is:

  • A parent or a legal guardian.
  • An authorised guardian who is 18 years or older nominated by the parent or legal guardian.

Fare pricing

  • The accompanied minor may be booked on child fare if booked on the same Booking Reference Number (PNR) as the accompanying adult.

Seating
The minor and their accompanying adult will be allotted seats next to each other in the aircraft.

Documents to be submitted

  • Consent letter: A filled and notarised form that is signed by the parent or legal guardian that clearly states the details of the authorised adult accompanying the minor in their absence.

    Please state the details of the parent, legal guardian, and authorised adult in the consent form.

  • Identity proof: As per the type of travel, please submit the following document of the minor:
    • Domestic travel: Photocopies of any valid government issued identity proof.
    • International travel: Photocopies of relevant pages of their passport.
  • Photocopy of identification document: Depending on international or domestic travel, the authorised adult need to submit:
    International flight: Photocopies of relevant pages of their passport.
    Domestic flight: Photocopies of any valid government issued identity proof.
  • We may require additional documents, depending on the sector you are travelling. We request that you reach out to your nearest consulate for more details.
  • The forms and relevant documents need to be submitted to the nearest Air India city booking or airport ticketing office at least six hours prior to the flight’s departure.
  • We request the adult accompanying the minor to handle the ticket, documents, and guide the minor through all airport formalities.
