Any additional weight carried by guests beyond the allotted Free Baggage Allowance (FBA) is considered excess baggage. Save up to *20% by prepaying for your excess baggage compared to airport charges.

Eligibility

  • You can prepay for extra baggage (additional bags or total weight beyond the standard allowance) up to 2 hours before departure.
  • For a single bag over the weight limit, you can buy extra allowance up to 32 kg until 6 hours before your flight.
  • Guests holding a valid e-ticket starting with the number 098 can use this offer for all Air India flights (except interline and codeshare flights).

At the airport baggage charges for weight concept

Weight concept 

If your ticket's baggage allowance is weight-based (known as weight concept), you will be charged for any additional weight beyond the allowance specified in your ticket. Each bag can’t weigh more than 32 kg/ 70 lb.

Excess baggage rate is mentioned in INR per kilogram and is exclusive of applicable taxes.

Passengers with a Free Baggage Allowance (FBA) of up to 25 kg are allowed 1-piece of check-in baggage, while those with an FBA of 25 kg or more are allowed 2-pieces. Charges may apply for any check-in baggage exceeding the allowed number of pieces.

Tax rates are applicable on the value reflected on Excess Baggage Tickets (EBTs) issued in India, except those from tax-exempted airports.

Passengers travelling from or to the following airports are exempt from paying tax.

At the airport baggage charges for piece concept

Piece concept 

If your ticket's baggage allowance is piece-based (known as piece concept), you will be charged for any additional piece beyond the allowance specified in your ticket. Each piece has a weight allowance of 23 kg/ 50 lb beyond which you will be charged for overweight pieces. Each bag can’t weigh more than 32 kg/ 70 lb.

Excess baggage rates are quoted in USD and CAD for each additional piece.

At the airport charges for oversized baggage

If your baggage exceeds the total size and weight limit dimensions, you'll be charged an oversized baggage handling fee.

Baggage exceeding the permitted dimension of 158 cm/ 62 in (length + breadth + height) is considered oversize baggage and is subject to additional charges per bag or piece.

Checked baggage item weighing more than 32 kg/ 70 lb (per piece) will not be accepted and must be transported as cargo.

Checked baggage items with dimensions (length + breadth + height) greater than 200 cm/ 78 in (per piece) will not be accepted as checked baggage and need to be transported by cargo.

Special baggage items with dimensions (length + breadth + height) greater than 300 cm/ 118 in will not be accepted as checked baggage and need to be transported by cargo.

  5. Any extra weight over and above the prepaid allowances must be paid for at the airport, as per the standard airport excess baggage rate.
  6. Excess baggage purchased must be used for checked baggage on the flight specified in the booking. This service cannot be used for cargo transportation.
  7. If the date or time of the booked flight changes, the excess baggage allowance will be linked to the new flight. Contact our customer support team for assistance.
  8. For passengers holding round-trip tickets, separate excess baggage payment is required for the return flight if needed.
  9. Prepaid excess baggage is only applicable for multi-city travel if the passenger is in transit and when the baggage is checked through to the final destination. If the passenger collects baggage at any airport during the journey, additional excess baggage fees apply to subsequent flights.
  10. Refund policy:
    • No partial or complete refund will be made at the check-in counter for baggage weighing less than the purchased excess baggage amount.
    • Air India will provide a full refund of excess baggage payments if Air India cancels the flight.
    • For bookings that are cancelled by passengers 48 hours before departure and in accordance with fare terms prior to flight departure, Air India will provide a full refund of excess baggage payments.
    • Excess baggage payments are non-refundable in case of a no-show for scheduled flights.
