Travelling with Children

If you are travelling with your baby who is over 7 days and under 2 years of age on the date of travel, you will need to produce the following documents during check-in:

Birth certificate of the baby
Vaccination certificate of the baby
Passport is mandatory in case of international travel

Special cases

In special cases you may be allowed to travel with your infant below 7 days of age for medical reasons. In such cases, please ensure that you carry a medical certificate signed by a paediatrician and obtain prior clearance from Air India's medical department.

Additional information

If you are unable to produce valid proof of age as listed above, an adult fare as applicable on the date of booking will be charged for the infant to be allowed to travel, subject to availability of seats.

As per our rules, designed for the safety and comfort of all our passengers, only one infant can travel in the care of an adult.

If you are travelling with more than one infant under two years of age, each of them should be accompanied by an adult traveller aged 18 years or above.

Please note that infants must be booked in the same cabin and fare type as the accompanying adult for all segments or sectors of the journey.

We do not allow the use of child airplane seat extenders onboard our flights.

We are happy to provide infant bassinets free of cost, subject to availability on our flights. You can request a bassinet at the time of booking your flights or when checking in at the airport. Alternatively, you can raise a request for the same on our customer support portal, and an executive will assist you.

At Air India, we do not permit infants, that is, children below 5 years of age, to travel alone. They must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or an authorised adult.

However, minors 5 to 17 years of age may travel unaccompanied. Here is how we categorise children by age group:

  • Unaccompanied MinorChildren aged 5 to 11 years, travelling alone, are considered unaccompanied minors.
  • Young Passenger:  Children aged 12 to 17 years, travelling alone, are considered young passengers.

We offer chargeable assistance to unaccompanied minors and young passengers that include:

  • Accepting the child at the departure airport, after final document verification. The acceptance is at the discretion of the airport staff.
  • Guiding your child with utmost care through all airport formalities to the aircraft.
  • Escorting your child to the designated boarding gate.
  • Priority boarding for your child.
  • In-flight care and assistance by the crew on board.
  • Handing over the child to the parent, legal guardian, or authorised adult at the arrival airport.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • The unaccompanied minor and young passenger assistance services are applicable only on Air India operated flights.
  • We do not offer this service on codeshare flights.
  • This service is not extended to connecting flights where any part of the journey is operated by another airline. For example, the unaccompanied minor service is not available for a flight from Mumbai to Chennai via Delhi, if Mumbai to Delhi is operated by Air India and Delhi to Chennai is operated by a different airline.
  • In case your child has a medical condition:
    • The service will be provided only after receiving clearance from our medical team.
    • If your child is unwell, the assistance expected should be within the care our staff can provide.
  • We do not extend our service to children requiring special assistance. In such cases, the child must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian to travel with us.

If your child is flying with Air India on a connecting flight, we take every measure to ensure their comfort and safety throughout their travel with us.

  • Supervision and safety: From the moment you entrust your child to our staff until they reach their destination, we provide all the support to get your child through all airport formalities, provide priority boarding, and ensure they feel cared for throughout their journey.
  • In the air: Our ground staff works in close co-ordination with the cabin crew for seamless transfer of your child. Our cabin crew will continue to provide all the inflight care and assistance required.
  • Baggage transfer: Your child’s baggage will be tagged to the destination, eliminating the need for any handling at the transit airport.

Note:

  • Our unaccompanied minor service is restricted to connecting flights where all sectors operated only by Air India.
  • Assistance will be provided within the scope of care our staff can reasonably offer.

In the event of a delay or a cancellation, your child will remain under our constant care and supervision. Our priority is to ensure the minor’s safety and provide clear communication throughout the journey. Hence, the parents or the legal guardians of the minor will be promptly informed of the delay, the arrangements underway due to the disruption, and any other necessary details.
