Frequently Asked Questions on Flying Returns

Have queries about the Flying Returns programme or not sure how to upgrade your club membership? We have all the answers.

Air India’s Flying Returns is the country’s first and one of the most rewarding frequent flyer programmes.

As a member, you can avail privileges and earn points each time you fly on a qualifying fare ticket on any class or sector on the extensive network of Air India or 25 Star Alliance member airlines. When you book your tickets from Air India’s website or mobile app, you earn bonus Flying Returns points, and clock Flying Returns points faster. Points earned on our non-airline partner’s loyalty programme can be converted to Flying Returns points and transferred to your Flying Returns account as per the partner programme rules. You can use points in the Flying Returns account to get award tickets for yourself or others (as per member account status) for travel on Air India or 25 Star Alliance member airlines.

Membership is open to individuals who are two years and above of age, in all countries except those that prohibit it by law. Members of ages 2 to 12 will be enrolled as child members.

You can enrol in the programme by clicking here.

  • Fill in your personal details. The name should match that in your passport. Please include your middle name with your first name. Initials and abbreviated names are not accepted.
  • Provide a unique email and phone number, which are not registered with any other Flying Returns account.
  • Separate OTPs will be sent on the email and phone number which you must validate to register as a member.

You may enter a home or business address. Please note that we will mail all correspondence to your primary address as recorded in your Flying Returns account.

Membership cards and free upgrade vouchers are issued only to tier members, including Silver Edge Club, Golden Edge Club, and The Maharaja Club. Base and new FR members are issued a virtual card, which they can view after logging in their FR Account.

No. Each membership card is strictly personal to the individual to whom it has been issued and is non-transferable.

You should immediately report the loss, theft, or damage to the Flying Returns card by calling us at 1860-233-1407 (within India). We will debit 1000 FR points to reissue the card.  Air India may revise these rates from time to time.

However, if the card is not delivered due to an incorrect or old address in your account, an additional fee of the same number of points will be debited for resending the card.

You can present the upgrade voucher, a valid tier membership card at the check-in counter, along with a revenue ticket (not an award ticket), to get an upgrade.

Airport upgrade vouchers are a privilege extended to individual members of the tier clubs and are valid for travel only on Air India's domestic services by members only. These vouchers are subject to availability and are non-transferable, non-extendable, non-refundable and cannot be encashed.

The upgrade voucher is valid for six months from the date of issuance for Silver Edge Club, nine months from the date of issuance for Golden Edge Club, and 12 months from the date of issuance for The Maharaja Club.

For tier members residing abroad with a registered address outside of India, these vouchers are post-dated by one month, to account for transit.

The validity of these vouchers is limited and not extendable.

Extra baggage allowance for different tier members is as follows:

  • Nil for base tier members, who are not entitled to extra baggage over the applicable free allowance.
  • Silver Edge members are allowed an extra 10 kg or 01 (one) extra piece as per the cabin class, respectively for, weight and piece concept flights operated by Air India only.
  • Golden Edge and The Maharaja Club members are allowed an extra 20 kg or 01 (one) extra piece as per the cabin class, respectively, for weight and piece concept flights operated by Air India and Star Alliance Partner flights.

Note: Extra baggage allowance is not applicable on codeshare and Air India flights operated on ATR and CRJ aircraft.

Extra baggage allowance and lounge access are subject to change as per government directives.

You can earn Flying Returns Points by flying on Air India and Star Alliance member airlines. You can earn additional points as a web bonus by purchasing tickets on our website and mobile app.

To ensure you receive Flying Returns points, please provide your Flying Returns membership number for each reservation at the time of booking a flight. You may present your Flying Returns membership number when you check in at the airport. You must ensure that the name on the ticket issued matches your membership account name.

Flying Returns points will be credited after completing the trip. The points will not be credited immediately after reservation/ticketing/check-in. Members are not entitled to Flying Returns points for purchased but unused tickets. Flying Returns Points will not be credited for flights undertaken on award tickets redeemed against Flying Returns points. In the event of any upgradation of the ticket, points will be credited for the class of travel in which the member booked and not for the upgraded class of travel (Bid & Upgrade scheme being an exception.)

Anyone who travels on Air India or any Star partner airlines and is a member with us is eligible to earn Flying Returns Points. The points will be credited to the account of the passenger for whom the ticket was purchased.

You can earn and accumulate Flying Returns points on revenue tickets against specific booking classes only. Travel on other discounted tickets, charter flight tickets, non-revenue tickets and award tickets do not qualify towards earning or accumulating Flying Returns points. Please remember to check with the airline or travel agent before you book your flights, as there may be some discounted fares with specific booking class codes or designated routes that do not qualify for Flying Returns points accrual or allow reduced accrual.

You cannot earn or redeem Flying Returns Points on codeshare flights of Air India unless otherwise specified. For details, call us on 1860-233-1407 or visit www.airindia.com.

Remember to provide your Flying Returns number when you make your reservation or check in for your flight. It would be best to keep your ticket receipt and boarding pass until you see the points on your Flying Returns statement.

In cases of multiple-sector journeys (where a separate flight coupon is issued for each sector, and the flight number is not the same), you will get points equivalent to the sum of Flying Returns points of each sector.

If your Flying Returns points for flights undertaken have not been credited to your account, you may log in to your Flying Returns account and use the option 'Retro Claim' to submit the details of your journey not recorded in the Flying Returns account. You can then upload a copy of your ticket and boarding pass. Flying Returns points will be credited to your account if the correct details are submitted. Else you can use the option to rectify the error and resubmit or forward the claim to Air India.

You can upload a copy of the ticket and boarding pass here.

For missing points/Retro credit on AI or our Star Alliance partners, reach out to our customer support.

You must submit a claim within 180 days (six months) after travel for flights taken on Star Alliance or Code Share Airline and 365 days (12 months) on Air India.

If your name, nine digit Flying Returns number and PNR matches the details on your Flying Returns profile, then it takes up to two weeks for the points to get auto credited to your account.

You can log into your account and claim online Retro credit after 15 days of the request.

  • For flights on Air India in the past 365 days.
  • For flights with our Star Alliance Partners on eligible RBDs in the past 180 days.

To make a successful online claim, you must upload a copy of the relevant e-ticket and fill in details such as:

  • The 13 numeric digit ticket number.
  • The five- or six-digit alpha numeric PNR.
  • You are making a claim for self, not other. companions, or family against the same PNR.
  • The valid three- or four-digit flight number.

Note: All these details are available on the e-ticket. The missing points will be credited in no time if the details given above match our flight records.

Flying Returns points shall be valid for redemption till the end of the 36th month from the month of accrual in the Flying Returns account. For example, points accrued on 10 Jan 2021 shall remain valid for redemption till 31 Jan 2024.

Points transferred from a non-airline partner will be valid for 12 months. For example, points credited on 10 Jan 2022 shall remain valid until 31 Jan 2023.

No, any journey made on Star Alliance member airline flights before your enrolment date are not eligible for Flying Returns points. Any journey undertaken on Air India flights 12 months before your enrolment date is eligible for Flying Returns points credit. These points do not count towards change in your account status to Primary Active or Active.

Air India and all other Star Partner Airlines have their own frequent flyer programme with separate and different accrual and redemption norms. Clubbing together of the mileage points accrued on any independent Star Partner programmes with Flying Returns is not permitted. However, a member can avail the 'Star Redemption' feature of the respective airline for award redemption on any partner airline, including Air India.

After enrolment, you need to undertake one flight for yourself on Air India or Star Partner to make the Flying Returns account status as ‘Primary Active’, after which you can redeem Flying Returns points for yourself.

To redeem awards for family or friends, you must undertake at least five flights on Air India or Star Partners to change your Flying Returns account status to 'Active' from ‘Primary Active’. After this change you can redeem Flying Returns points for your family and friends.

You can book an award ticket by following any of the following options:

  • By logging in to your account using the Air India website.
  • You can contact our dedicated agents by calling on our toll-free number 1860-233-1407. We request you to call using your registered mobile number. You may have to clear additional security measures when booking your award ticket.

Primary Active status: A Flying Returns account is in Primary Active status when the member has undertaken less than five flight activities for accrual of Flying Returns points after enrolment. A primary Active Member can redeem awards for self only.

Active Status: A Flying Returns member attains active status on completing five flight activities for accrual of points after enrolment. An Active member can redeem award tickets for persons other than self.

In case of a request for award tickets for multiple sector journeys on Air India, where a separate flight coupon is issued for each sector, the flight number is different, Flying Returns Points required to be redeemed will be the sum of the Flying Returns Points of each sector. The condition applies to domestic sector added to an international journey to reach or exit the gateway point in India.

An award ticket on Star Alliance member airlines is issued on one-way journeys only. The redemption of Flying Returns Points is based on the distance between the two cities, and the zones in which they fall. Facility of stopover and transfer is not permitted. Flying Returns points need to be redeemed for each sector and flight coupon.

No, you cannot redeem on Air India subsidiaries such as Air India Express or codeshare flights.

The number of points required to book an award ticker for a child is the same as those for an adult.

In case if change is requested within 72hrs of departure, the penalty is 40%. And, if the change is requested after flight departure, a penalty of 50% is levied.

  • If the spouse is not a member of the programme, they will have to become a member.

MeraParivar is the name of the family pool programme offered by Air India to its Frequent Flyer Programme members. Family Pooling allows two or more individual members, who are related to each other, to link their accounts. This allows all the accruals in each account to be automatically transferred to the account of the 'Pramukh' or head of family, who can redeem the Flying Returns points.

Pooling Flying Returns points allows you to combine earned Flying Returns into a single account for easier redemption. Each member will still have a different account number, but they can use miles from the connected accounts when making a redemption. It also allows members with insufficient points or infrequent flying activities to utilise Flying Returns points.

A person holding the position of pramukh has to be an adult who is above 18 years of age and holds membership of the Frequent Flyer Programme. Pramukh is the only one who can request to create a family pool and invite other family members to join a family pool. They are also the only authorised member to redeem points from the pool. The term 'Pramukh' is gender-neutral. The pramukh should have an 'active' account status and a completed profile.

Pramukh is the only beneficiary in a family pool.

All sub-members linked to the family pool, except the pramukh (beneficiary or head of family), are contributors.

Pramukh can invite their spouse, parents, their spouse’s parents, siblings, and their spouse's siblings to join the family pool.

The pramukh and each contributor's account -

  • Must be linked to a unique email ID and mobile phone number.
  • They should have an account status as "active" or "primary active".
  • Members whose status is "prospect", "dormant", "suspended", or "expired" are not eligible to join the family pool.

The Air India backend team can create the family pool within 7-14 working days.

The Pramukh (head of the family) can request to create a family pool by CLICKING HERE. The Family Pool will be created only when approval is received from the sub-members.

The pramukh can follow the email template below for a request to create a family pool -

No, existing sub-members do not have to give their consent when the Pramukh requests to add a new sub-member.

Yes, sub-members can opt out of a Family Pool account after completing a year and paying a charge of 999 Flying Return points.

No, when a sub-member decides to leave a Family Pool account, they will not get any Flying Return points.

A voluntary dissolution means that the Pramukh has decided to end the Family Pool account. In such a scenario, a dissolution fee of 1999 Flying Return points is levied against the Pramukh’s account. In a scenario where the Pramukh dies, and the spouse does not want to be the new Pramukh, an involuntary dissolution takes place where no dissolution fee is charged.

If a Family Pool is dissolved voluntarily, after a deduction of 1999 Flying Return points, the remaining points will be equally divided among the sub-members and Pramukh. The points will have a validity of one year.

No, the Pramukh cannot relinquish their post in favour of their spouse or another family member.

Any sub-member who wants to exit the Family Pool must send us an exit request. Also, a penalty of 999 Flying Return points will be deducted from the sub-member’s account.

No, a record of the sub-members giving their consent while joining the Family Pool is available on email. So, there is no possibility of sub-members backtracking on their consent claim.

If the Pramukh passes away, the family pool will be dissolved, and the points will be divided equally among the sub-members.

If a sub-member passes away, the individual’s points are transferred to the Pramukh’s account with a validity of one year. The Pramukh should also send a request to Air India to delete the sub-member’s account and submit their death certificate.
